iPod Mini: Apple Replaces Popular Player
The first generation 4GB iPod Mini was announced in January 2004 and released
the following month. In February 2005 the second generation upgrade included 4GB
and 6GB Minis capable of holding roughly 1,000 and 1,500 songs.
The Mini measures 3.6 x 2.5 x 0.5 inches and weighs 3.6 ounces, 0.5" shorter
and 2 ounces lighter than the full sized iPod. It features the popular iPod
Click Wheel and comes in silver, blue, green or pink. The second generation Mini
improved the 8-hour battery life to 18 hours.
Critics questioned whether the Mini would sell when first announced. At $249
it was only $50 less than the 15GB iPod with nearly four times the capacity. But
less than a month later Apple reported they had already received orders for more
than 100,00 of the mini iPods, proving Apple had another winner.
Nano Replaces Mini
Just over a year and a half after its debut, Apple replaced the Mini with the
smaller, thinner, lighter iPod Nano in September 2005. The 2GB and 4GB Nanos are
solid-state flash players include photo capability not available on the Mini.
They can store and display up to 25,000 photos and slide shows accompanied by
music.
Apple has removed all information pages regarding the Mini from their web
site, so the only sources are now dealers or other sites.
