Like they've done with computers, Dell has made their mark
with the Dell DJ. The no nonsense mp3 players rate high marks with both consumers
and reviewers. Not given to lots of whistles and bells, Dell's Digital Jukeboxes
are compact and reliable at prices that will leave something left over to
actually buy some music.
Standard DJ Features
MP3, WAV and WMA formats (includes DRM protected PlaysForSure). Music Match
Jukebox is included and Windows Media Player is supported.
Integrated lithium polymer rechargeable battery packs recharge in as little as 1
hour (AC adapter or USB) with up to 14 hour playback.
Durable brushed aluminum bodies and easy to read LCD screens with blue
back-light. DJ 20, DJ 30 and Pocket DJ feature easy 3-way roller barrels for
menu up, down and select.
Eight pre-set modes plus 4 band customizable equalizers (except Ditty with 6
pre-set modes - normal, pop, jazz, rock, classical & spoken word).
Dell Jukebox Choices
The Dell Digital Jukebox line currently includes the following four models:
- DJ 30 - 30GB 1.8" hard drive stores up to 15,000 songs. 4.0
X 2.5 X 0.74 inches, 6.8 oz. 26-pin dock connector and USB 2.0 via dock
connector.
- DJ 20 - 20GB 1.8" hard drive stores up to 9,900 songs. 4.0 X
2.5 X 0.74 inches, 6.8 oz. 26-pin dock connector and USB 2.0 via dock
connector.
- Pocket DJ - 5GB 1.0" MicroDrive for up to 2,500 song playlist.
3.5 X 2.1 X 0.5 inches, 4.4 oz. USB 2.0 and USB mini-B port.
- DJ Ditty - 512MB flash memory for up to 220 songs. 3.6 X 1.1 X
0.5 inches, 1.29 oz., including built-in USB 2.0 connector and FM tuner.
Also supports Napster to Go.
It should be noted that Dell estimates capacities based on encoding songs at
64kbps. Most music lovers will find sound quality disappointing at this bit
rate, choosing instead 128kbps or higher. So the number of songs each DJ player
will hold should realistically be cut in half.
Nevertheless, starting at less than $100, the Dell mp3 player line continues Dell's tradition of quality at affordable prices and deserves a look.
